4,000 people in Tipperary hit by Boil Water Notice
In Jun 2023 approximately 3,900 residents in Tipperary, supplied by a Public Water Supply, were issued a Boil Water Notice to protect their health, after cryptosporidium was detected in the water supply.
In this case study, we explore the problem of Cryptosporidiosis in drinking water and show the results of the IF Water|One water purifier.
What is Cryptosporidiosis?
Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite that causes the diarrheal disease cryptosporidiosis. Cryptosporidiosis, a resilient microscopic parasite known as "Crypto," primarily affects children under the age of 15 and is more prevalent during spring and late autumn. This disease is commonly transmitted through water. In the United States, Cryptosporidium is a leading cause of waterborne illnesses among humans.
The problem with Parasites
Private water supplies, including wells, springs, and cisterns, are particularly vulnerable to Parasites like Cryptosporidium if not operated, and maintained properly.
Part of the reason Crypto is so difficult to purify is because its outer shell grants it remarkable resistance to chlorine disinfection, enabling it to survive outside the body for extended periods.
The parasite can persist in untreated water for prolonged periods, with symptoms including diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, and dehydration, posing severe risks to young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.
Why traditional purifiers fail
The durable outer shell of Cryptosporidium oocysts enables them to survive in various environmental conditions, making them resistant to many standard disinfection techniques.
Filters collect germs from water, so regular maintenance and cartridge replacement is necessary.
Boiling water is more effective at removing Cryptosporidium than filters because filters may have manufacturing flaws or improper maintenance, allowing small numbers of Cryptosporidium to pass through.
How WaterOne solves the problem
Evaporative systems, like the IF Water|One, have emerged as a highly effective method for removing parasites, such as Cryptosporidium. By subjecting source water to high temperatures, distillation effectively inactivates bacteria, viruses, and protozoan cysts.
The heat-based approach effectively neutralises the parasite's outer shell, rendering it inactive and preventing further spread.
Test results and data
Numerous tests and studies have demonstrated the efficacy of distillation systems in eliminating protozoa such as Cryptosporidium.
In Scottish Water tests in Gorthleck, IF found complete biological removal from multiple samples.
The reliability and efficacy of distillation make it a trusted method for safeguarding drinking water, offering peace of mind to individuals and communities reliant on private water supplies.
Remove Parasites from your property
Removing Parasites consistently can be challenging for traditional purifiers, but the unique WaterOne purifies differently for absolute Parasite removal.
