Iron and Manganese are complicated and expensive contaminants to remove
On the Isle of Coll in Scotland, residents live with high levels of iron and manganese in their private water supplies. As many properties need to remove this to pass annual drinking water standards, this has caused a frustrating problem.
In this case study, we explore the problem of high iron and manganese levels in water on the Isle of Coll in Scotland and show the results of the IF Water|One water purifier.
What is Manganese?
Manganese is a mineral that is found naturally in the environment and is one of the most abundant metals on the earth’s surface, in air, water, and soil. It can be found in both groundwater and surface water from natural sources or as a result of human activity such as mining and industrial discharges.
Metals like iron and manganese pose challenges in reaching drinking water standards. These contaminants, originating from deep in the earth or ageing pipework, are not easy to remove with traditional purification methods.
The problem with heavy metals
While Iron is generally harmless to human health, its presence causes failed water quality tests, causes cosmetic problems, damages appliances, affects taste and odor, and promotes bacterial growth.
Manganese however, poses long-term neurological risks when consumed excessively through drinking water. Discoloration, bitter taste, and plumbing blockages are common issues associated with manganese contamination.
Why traditional purifiers fail
Reverse Osmosis, Oxidation and Filtration systems all struggle with reducing both manganese and iron. High concentrations build up quickly on the membrane’s surface, clogging their pores and increasing strain on the units.
These systems are expensive to install, maintain and run, and seasonal load can cause overnight clogging or breakdown.
How WaterOne solves the problem
To address the iron and manganese contamination, an IF system was tested.
The vapour distillation process used by IF involves converting water into vapour, then condensing it to produce purified water. During this process, heavy metals are unable to turn into steam and are left behind in the evaporation chamber. The resulting water is free from minerals and contaminants, providing a highly pure and safe drinking water source.
Remove your Heavy Metals
Removing Heavy Metals consistently can be challenging for traditional purifiers, but the unique WaterOne purifies differently for absolute Heavy Metal removal.
